How Many People Use AI?

Report highlights. According to the latest available data, more than half of Americans interact with AI on a daily basis.
- Pew Research finds that 55% of Americans report regularly using AI; 44% say they are not regular users.
- 27% of Americans report interacting with AI several times per day or more.
- The number of AI users worldwide is estimated to reach 729.11 million by 2030.
- Despite growing AI usage, 64% of Americans are unaware they are using it.
- Almost all (99%) Americans report using at least one of the most common AI-powered tools every week: weather apps, streaming services, online shopping, social media, virtual assistants, and GPS.
- Over 80% of Americans report using four or more common AI tools every week.
- Of Americans who are not sure they use AI, 47% report using AI-powered virtual assistants, such as Alexa or Siri.
- 78% of young Americans (18–29) believe AI will negatively impact their ability to find quality employment.
Demographics of AI users
The demographics of AI users vary most by age, gender, and education level.
- 46% of younger adults (18–29) report using AI weekly, compared to 23% of adults over 65.
- Men know more about AI than women (38% to 23%).
- 86% of university students regularly use AI tools for their studies, with 24% using AI daily and 54% weekly.
- University-educated people are more likely to understand AI than those without a university education (62% to 40%).
AI usage by age
AI usage and adoption is largely led by younger age groups (18–29), whereas Gen X and Baby Boomers are lagging behind, with 68% being nonusers.
- Nearly half (46%) of young people aged 18–29 use AI on a weekly basis.
- Only 14% of people aged 41–60 use virtual assistants weekly, but that number jumps to 30.8% for users 61 and older.
- Gen X and Baby Boomers are less likely to use generative AI; 68% of nonusers belong to these groups.
- Millennials are the most excited about AI, at 62%, followed by Gen Z at 57%.
- Only 42% of Gen X and 30% of boomers are excited about AI.
- Millennials and Gen Z make up 65% of AI “super users.”
- 20% of adults aged 18–59 use AI to edit documents; 17% to write emails; 14% to take notes; and 13% to create art.
- 20% of teenagers are using AI to write reports and 16% use it to make presentations.
- American workers under 50 are only slightly more likely to use AI in their job (17%) compared to those over 50 (13%).
AI usage by gender
AI use by gender is higher among men than women.
- Men are slightly more aware of their use of AI than women (38% to 23%).
- 51% of men feel more excited than concerned about AI, compared to 40% of women.
- Men are more likely to claim knowledge of AI than women (60% to 40%).
- While generative AI use has grown considerably, the gender gap remains. In 2023, 11% of women and 20% of men were using AI. By 2024, those numbers had grown to 33% of women and 44% of men.
AI usage based on education levels
AI usage, awareness, and knowledge decreases or increases based on one's education levels.
- A Digital Education Council Global AI Student Survey found 86% of college students use AI tools for their studies.
- 24% of college students reported using AI daily and 54% weekly.
- University-educated people are more likely to understand AI than those without a university education (62% to 40%).
- 46% of students who use AI are using it for research purposes.
- Only 58% of high school students report using AI technologies, compared to 86% of higher education students.
- The number of students who use AI (66%) has almost caught up to that of both high school and college teachers (67%).
- Among students who are largely unaware of AI guidelines, 76% report regularly using it in their studies.
- Post-secondary students are only slightly more likely than high school students to say AI has positively affected their efficiency (63% to 53%).
- Only 38% of teachers believe AI will have a positive impact on education in the future, 13% lower than in 2023.
AI usage by country
China has the highest percentage of people using AI (83%), compared to 73% in India, 49% in Australia, 45% in the US, and 29% in the UK.
China
- As of 2024, at least 83% of Chinese citizens are using generative AI.
- 96% of Chinese have expressed interest in expanding their AI knowledge.
- More than half (60%) of Chinese Gen Z users have used AI, including chatbots, on social media.
- About one-third of Chinese Gen Z users indicate willingness to form friendships with AI-generated chatbots.
- About 30% of the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek’s 33.7 million monthly active users are from China, followed by India (13.5%), Indonesia (7%), the US (4.3%), and France (3.2%).
- China leads in generative AI patents, registering 38,000+ in the last 10 years, compared to 6,276 in the US.
India
- The number of Indians using generative AI has grown to 73%.
- 92% of Indian knowledge workers use AI in their workplace, considerably higher than the global average of 75%.
- A total of 59% of Indians polled in the Bosch Tech Compass Survey are actively pursuing AI education.
- Of India’s 900 million internet users, 90% are already using AI in some form.
- 46% of Indian consumers use ChatGPT, making it the largest market for the platform.
Australia
- Australians’ use of generative AI has grown to 49%, up from 38% in 2023.
- 79% of Australians believe AI increases productivity.
- Australian excitement about AI’s role in productivity (48%) is slightly higher than the global average of 42%.
- 47% of Australians believe AI will positively impact jobs in the next 5 years.
- 39% of Australians expect AI to improve the economy, rising from 29% the previous year.
United Kingdom
- Of Britons surveyed, 29% reported using generative AI.
- The Student Generative AI Survey 2025 shows that 92% of British students now use AI in some form, up from 66% in 2024.
- Forbes Advisor Poll shows that 85% of Britons are familiar with AI language models like Chat GPT.
AI usage by purpose
People primarily use AI for work and learning. Of those polled, 11% said they were not interested in using AI for any one specific task.
Work
- Of generative AI users polled, 75% use AI at work for automating tasks and work communication.
- 32% of the workforce utilize AI for data analysis.
- The most popular way of using AI in the workplace, at 26% of workers, is for writing tasks, including crafting emails, summarizing reports, and creating content for presentations.
- 21% of workplace AI users leverage AI for managing schedules and calendars.
Personal
- Over a third of those who use generative AI (38%) use it for fun.
- About a third (34%) use AI for learning about topics of interest.
- 43% of people use AI to answer financial questions.
- 45% of people use AI to reply to emails or text messages (likely both personal and work).
- 38% of users plan travel itineraries using AI.
Public trust and perception of AI
When it comes to public trust and the perception of AI, consumers are evenly split between viewing AI optimistically and skeptically.
- Half of consumers view AI optimistically.
- 60% of consumers believe AI features are important in smartphones.
- 65% of consumers trust businesses that utilize AI, while 14% do not, and 21% are neutral.
- 78% of respondents to a Gartner poll think the benefits of AI outweigh the risks.
- Only 39% believe in the safety and security of AI technology.
Concerns
The biggest AI-related concerns relate to cybersecurity and misinformation.
- A large majority (80%) of respondents express concerns about the potential for sophisticated AI-powered cyberattacks.
- 78% of people worry about identity theft, which could include deepfakes and voice cloning to impersonate individuals, access financial accounts, and damage reputation.
- 74% of respondents are concerned about AI-generated deceptive political ads that could mislead voters and influence election outcomes.
- 61% of respondents worry about fake AI-generated product reviews.
- 59% of people express concerns about AI in job applications.
