How many companies are using AI by country?

The adoption of AI varies significantly across countries, where larger enterprises generally lead implementation.

United States

The number of companies using AI in the US varies by company size. 

  • Large US companies show higher AI adoption rates than smaller companies. Over 50% of companies employing 5,000+ staff have implemented AI, while this figure rises to over 60% among companies that employ 10,000+ staff. 
  • 10% of businesses with 250+ staff have implemented AI.
  • 40% of small US businesses are using generative AI, up from 23% in 2023. 
  • 91% of these businesses predict it will drive growth.
  • Companies in information services, manufacturing, and healthcare lead with about 12% adoption, compared to 4% for construction and retail businesses.
  • 6.1% of US companies used AI to produce goods or services in 2024.
  • 65% of chief financial officers (CFOs) reported insufficient return on investment (ROI) as a significant barrier to AI deployment in their companies.
  • Only 13% of CFOs report an extremely positive ROI from generative AI use.

China

In China, half of companies are using AI and the majority have accelerated their investments in recent years.

  • The number of AI-related companies in China (those that use AI in their name, patent portfolio, or business scope) was 1.67 million in 2024.
  • Of these 1.67 million companies, nearly 90% (over 1.48 million) were established after the publication of an AI development plan by the Chinese cabinet in 2017. 
  • 50% of companies in China are using AI, and nearly 85% of companies have accelerated their AI rollout plans or investments in AI in the past two years. 
  • 10% of companies in China have implemented generative AI in 2025, up from 8% six months ago. 
  • As of 2024, 15%, or 4,500, of the world’s core AI companies are based in China.

India

In India, 59% of companies are actively implementing AI solutions.

  • 59% of companies in India are actively using AI, and 74% of companies have accelerated AI deployment or investments in the past two years.
  • According to the Cisco 2024 AI Readiness Index, only 18% of Indian companies are equipped to fully apply AI.
  • One of the key reasons reported for slow AI adoption among Indian companies is that the return on investment does not meet expectations.
  • Small & Medium Business Trends reports that 78% of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in India have either adopted or are experimenting with AI.
  • 93% of surveyed SMEs reported that AI implementation contributed to growth in revenue.

Canada

In Canada, which shows moderate AI adoption, 37% of enterprise-level companies are implementing AI, though usage varies between large corporations and small businesses.

  • In terms of generative AI, 9.3% of Canadian companies were using it in 2024 and 4.3% had plans to deploy it.

Italy

Only 23% of Italian companies are using AI, but that number is gradually increasing.

  • 23% of Italian companies have adopted AI as of 2023, increasing from 18% in 2022.
  • Among large Italian companies, 61% are engaging with AI through at least one experimental project, while only 18% of SMEs have undertaken similar initiatives.
  • For Italian businesses that have adopted AI, 88% report increased efficiency and 75% report enhanced innovation and customer experience.

Singapore

In Singapore, 53% of large companies have deployed AI and nearly all businesses are planning future AI investments.

Germany

One in five German companies uses AI, which represents a significant increase from the previous year.

  • 20% of German companies (with at least 10 employees) were planning to use AI in 2024, up from 12% in 2023.
  • 48% of large German companies (those with more than 250 employees) use AI, compared to 28% of medium companies (50–249 employees) and 17% of small companies (10–49 employees).
  • Among companies that use AI, the most widely adopted technologies were text mining and written language analysis (48%), speech recognition (47%), and natural language processing (34%).
  • In German companies, AI is primarily used in marketing and sales (33%), followed by production and service processes (25%), administrative tasks (24%), and fiscal tasks (24%).

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom’s growing AI ecosystem, 15% of companies actively use AI and many more are planning future implementation.

  • In the UK, 15% of companies (about 432,000 total) were using at least one AI technology in 2022.
  • 2% (about 62,000) of companies are experimenting with AI while 10% (about 292,000) plan to use AI in the future.
  • As of 2023, 3,170 AI companies focus their businesses on AI or include AI as part of a wider product offering.
  • Since 2011, an average of 269 new AI companies have been registered annually. 

Australia

Australian companies are embracing AI at a high rate; 68% of companies have adopted AI and nearly two-thirds have implemented generative AI solutions.

  • By 2025, 80% of customer service organizations are expected to employ generative AI in some form, primarily through chatbots, to enhance agent productivity and customer experience.
  • 15% of contact centers are using generative AI for expediting customer authentication, summarizing and simplifying solution options, automating call summaries, and providing follow-up recommendations.
  • 70% of companies are making active investments in tools that autonomously capture and interpret intent signals.

Marketing

Marketing departments are increasingly harnessing AI for personalized customer experience, content creation, and data-driven strategy development.
